Dealing With A Smelly Carpet
Here is a very simple but effective strategy that you can implement in the home on a regular basis in order to maintain the cleanliness of your carpets.
This tip will also help to neutralise and even remove any lingering carpet odours that have developed.
Household odours are a funny thing in that we can all get used to the smell of our own place and we may be oblivious to how bad our houses may smell.
Often the main culprit of these foul smells is your carpet, carpets are incredibly absorbent and really soak up and retain the smells around them (eg strong smelling food, cooking curries, cigarette smoke, dirt and oil we carry on our shoes and feet, odours that your dog carries).
If you have a mould and mildew problem in your house that could also be a cause of your odour problems.
Now ideally we would all just pay to have our carpets professionally cleaned every three months but these can be expensive and unrealistic for the majority of people.
The good news is that everybody can implement this simple strategy and all you need is a vacuum cleaner and some of the baking soda.
Removing carpet odour
Baking soda has a variety of different uses in the household and among these is the patters ability to effectively neutralise and absorb odours as opposed to just masking or covering up smell.
First vacuum all the carpeted areas and then take very generous amounts of baking soda and sprinkle it all over the carpet in your house.
Our suggestion is that you use in the top of a sieve & just fill them with backing soda and use that to evenly apply the baking soda on to the carpet.
Depending on the manner, you might have to refill the sieve several times.
Once you spread a generous amount of baking soda onto the carpets then you want to leave the baking soda on the carpet for at least two hours.
The longer it is left to work and neutralising and absorbing the carpet odours, the more effective that this will be.
A good idea is to apply the baking soda before going to bed and leave it on the carpet overnight and then the next day you just vacuum all of the baking soda and your carpet will then smell far fresher and then much cleaner.
As this strategy is both simple and cost effective, you can do this regularly in order to keep on top of the buildup of on uncleanliness and subsequent carpet odours.
